Marsh’s Asia Management Conference held July 5-9, was structured around supporting the regional team’s on-going efforts to assist Tsunami impacted communities.
Asia’s CEO and Chairman, David Batchelor says, ”The ongoing effect of last year’s Tsunami can now be counted in dollars even though much of the damage has been repaired tourists have not returned to Tsunami hit areas, creating severe economic problems.”
For this reason, Phuket was specifically selected as Asia’s conference destination in an attempt to aid the area in a practical and real way.
In addition, Marsh contributed some of the US$80,000 of relief funds raised by Asia colleagues and matched by the company to aid two schools on Ko Yao, an island an hour off Phuket's coast.
In keeping with our focus that aid funded by the collection will be on-going, Marsh assisted in providing playground equipment, a shade apparatus and a fence all items that the schools needed. Now, a program is being established that will provide support to the schools over the next three years.
The equipment was hauled and erected by volunteer teams of Asia’s senior managers as part of the conference program. “This is one of the best things I’ve done for a long time,” said Chris Trimblett, Asia’s compliance head.
The 22 volunteers, who were asked to consider if they can swim, get seasick or are unduly alarmed by snakes before the trip, found the exercise extremely fulfilling. “The old equipment was completely rusted through and made from old drums and other things. To see the children’s excitement and their smiles when they began to play on their new stuff was truly gratifying,” said India MD, Peter Phillips.
“I am extremely proud of our colleagues for their generous donations and of the volunteers who delivered the first load of aid. We envisage teams from various Marsh offices in Asia will visit on similar expeditions in the future,” says Batchelor.
